My most concise explanation of magic to date.

What is Magic?

Imagine that all around you are subtle waves of energy. Like light or air you mostly have tuned it out because it is ever present and it is the source of all things that occur. Keep these subtle forces in mind; see them in your imagination almost like the electromagnetic spectrum of light. Each color is a force that is causing something to occur or be experienced. So, consider times when you feel blessed, lucky, cursed, loved, angry, powerful, smart, brilliant, etc. Each of those times had a particular abundance of a certain subtle force either from planetary, astrological, elemental or from the local astral plane. Rarely does one have moments or days when it is a pure unmingled force affecting you. Even in blissful moments other influences are mingled in that time. Magic is the ability to read the influences present in a situation and then through the activity of imagination and will working with or transforming the influences of the subtle forces to produce a result.

Tool kit

A professional is only as good as their tools. What tools does someone use for magic? Every occult tradition has some system of divination. Tarot cards, Runes, I-Ching, skrying mirrors, and so on. The universal appeal for such items in the use of magic can of course be seen as the curious human mind desiring to know what comes next. The deeper experience of divination tools is that they are truly devices that show what influences are present or will be present in the way of subtle forces, at any given time. They give the astral weather forecast. We will use tarot cards as the example from here on, but just as easily one could use any system of divination which is in truth a map of the spiritual realities and experiences that make up creation. How does a tarot deck reveal the hidden subtle influences? The act of choosing a series of cards to read the situation, because of the impact and the influence of the subtle forces on all things thereby influences the choosing and selection of the cards! So, just like being “lucky” or being “depressed” effects every activity so it seems like you are either lucky at everything or everything is a reminder of your sadness, so do tarot cards pick up this influence and reveal the cards that are influencing the world around you.

How do you use it to work magic?

You have chosen a deck that for you at that moment best speaks to your view of spiritual realities. You chose a spread to read the situation (I can hear the questions now: “What deck do you recommend?” “What spread do you recommend?” my answer to both is it really doesn’t matter as long as it resonates with you. If some other deck or spread comes along that you think is better, use it!) And the influences are now there before you. Imagine these images as windows or doors into the pure subtle forces that are manipulating everything around you. You may step into these gates or windows and allow your imagination to produce the proper symbols into a conscious experience to you. Now you may be thinking, “What if I read the cards and my situation is terrible but the cards all show positive influences?” You did not read it wrong! What happened is that the terrible situation is produced from your reaction to these influences that is not developed, refined or positive. If you are going through a break-up and get a happy love card you will think this is all wrong but it is not the force or card that is wrong but your current mindset that has become opposed to the force. No force in and of itself is bad or good, just like Red is not good or bad just our associations to the color.
Now that you have read your cards and know what influences are present you can now work your magic. Imagine you were about to go on a fantasy adventure into some mystic realm, the cards before you illustrate the setting of your adventure! You must choose based on this story of yours what weapon, what item, power, magic or skill you will bring with you in order to influence the story in your direction. You can use sigils, talismans, other tarot cards, magical tools, words of power, gods, spirits, angels, power animals, elementals, WHATEVER YOU WANT!!! Just step through the gates with your aids or tools and explore your adventure, when things occur that allow you to influence the forces work your magic as a hero or wizard would in a storybook or movie. By changing the influence or the story the subtle forces will change (and so can you) so that your life or current situation changes as well.

Talismans, sigils, spells and tools
What is the purpose of all the ritual extras magicians have, the lists, books, spells and memorizations and so on? Each is a tool that can be used to cause change. Each is like a character in a story that can help, boost, explain, protect and work for and with you. You can have hundreds or just a few. As long as it holds some symbolic meaning it can be effective. Talismans give symbolic pictures that when focused on, and meditated on influence the subtle forces around you to act in accordance with your will and imagination. One can use them as a gateway to enter and explore, a magnet that draws the influence around you or as a tool to enter another image and cause changes there with it. Even just looking at a magical image for a just a few minutes with focus and a receptive mind can be enough to activate the influences it can bring to you! The same can be said for sigils.
The important thing is to have some meaning and to allow your mind to creatively imagine the image. Think of when you look at wood grain on panels or clouds in the sky. Your mind begins to give it a shape and meaning so that it looks like something else altogether. When you can produce that experience with a sigil then you have activated it with the imagination and can then imaginatively work with it as you can with any other tool. In this way an alphabet of desire a collection of sigils is like a personal army at your disposal on the subtle planes.

This is magic. This is one reason why I created my Tumblr account, to create these images and share them with you. Not only is it me acquiring more tools it is also sharing my tools with you!

    1. I did when I was younger and did not have any magical experience. Luckily I had a very nice and friendly stranger who happened to be a strong psychic see what was going on and helped me banish it and heal. I recommend daily if not twice daily banishings and invocations to your highest divine concept. Doing this will remove the connection and increase your vibration so that the darker influence won't be able to stick around.

  2. Hi Justin. There is something I have never been able to figure out. If I want to achieve something using magic, how often do I need to cast a spell, perform a ritual, etc.? Do I cast the spell daily until I get what I want? Do I cast it once? Or whenever I feel like it? This has always puzzled me.

Also, I have trouble physically manifesting things. I usually get to the point where I get a bunch of signs that my magic is working and what I want is at the verge of manifesting, and then... that's it. That's all I get. It's as if I hit a sticking point, and I can't seem to obtain it.. Do you have any advice I can use?

    Thank you!

    1. First realize magic like any activity requires focus and persitance in practice. Like weight lifting you must slowly graduate to bigger tasks but begin small. Make sure the task or result you seek at first could border on the everyday or coincidental. Then when successfull go slightly bigger. Make sure you are casting for something your entire being agrees with, examine your thoughts, beliefs and past experiences and see how you feel towards the intended result, if not you will get partial results. Try shoaling (ala Gordon from Rune Soup as I find this helps) several similar goals with other desires and one or two results you have already attained as a means of directing the rest to manifest and helping move your consciousness away from thinking on just one goal. Finally, make sure the symbols used in magic mean something to you. Every symbol should carry some "weight" in terms of meaning and experience with it.

  3. hello if i imagine or fantasize something for a long time will some larvae or phantom be created like for example i always think about armored vehicles like for the whole day or fantasize about anything? thank you

    1. People think about things all the time, each thought produces a thoughtform even if it lasts a second. Try to take the magical term away and find the everyday term and a lot of the mysticism vanishes. An obsession is an unhealthy focus on a subject. This is magically called a phantom. Unless all you can think about is armored vehicles all day I doubt it is a problem!

  4. Hi justin, Ive recently embarked on the journey of learning to read spiritual and practical alchemical texts à la Adam McLean and I was wondering if you can clear some questions I have about alchemy.

How does practical alchemy (spagyrics) affect the spiritual bodies? Does spending time crushing up the herbs, etc. And drinking the tinctures affect the aura?

    1. Everything effects everything else. Spiritual practices change physical reality and physical activities change the spiritual, this is foundational to magical rituals. The herbs have associations realted to elemwnts and spheres so injesting their rarefied essence you transform the three bodies in a powerful way.

  6. Hey Justin, I believe in a past blog you mentioned how at a certain point while working through IIH that depression can be extremely bad not only for the magician but for everyone around him.

Why is this? And what can one do to avoid harming others if deep sadness does show up?

    1. In the early stages it is possible yes, I have seen it happen a couple of times. For the initiate it can crop up once you have really started to transform yourself and realize how lonely it can be. It is like walking around awake when everyone around you is sleeping. You feel a sadness confronting this new way of existing. It is best helped by keeping in touch with friends and loved ones in a normal common way. You do not want to fall into the trap of thinking you are better or special, you are just experiencing an alternative way of being compared to others. The more common ground you can find with other people, especially non-magical people the better off you are and the less chance of "depression" has of sinking in. Some people try and solve it by finding and secluding themselves with other magical type people and while it is amazing to have friends that share your experiences if you do it and exclude "muggles" it will just make things worse over time.
While The Hermit is a powerful card and useful there are other cards. Do not exclude yourself from society, friends, family, new experiences, lovers, nature and other people! Be whole, be balanced, live life.

Obviously if you seclude yourself and feel no one can relate to you, those who are close to you (or were before you try and seclude yourself) will feel the distance, the loneliness and your isolation and feel as if you are pushing them away or being distant. So the easiest fix is DON'T DO THAT!

  7. justin have you met female magicians advanced in the spiritual magical path? do you work with evil inteligences? they are in ur artwork. do u have an explanation in the phenomenom of homo,bi and trans sexualities?

    1. I have met a couple of very strong female magic workers yes. I have called and worked with so called "evil" spirits. I have encountered maybe three spirits I would claim are actually evil. My explanation for the homo, big and trans situation is evolution, genetics and with a peppering of overpopulation (check out what happens to monkeys when placed in an overcrowded environment. But honestly it is not a new phenomenon, it is as old as mammals.

    2. would you mind sharing who are the female magicians? if they are in public like you of course. i think they inspire and amaze me the wealth of creation. but do you still actively work with them?(evil inteligences) there is a great taboo, tough magick has no white or black sides, the advanced master mage can work with both following to the divine providence unfolded on them, are you that mage?

    3. The only public female magic worker I have ever met (and she was quite a hoot) was Janet Farar, all the others do not have blogs or publish. There are tons of magic workers out there, chiping away at the work, impressive, skilled, highly intelligent and creative that just don't make a name for themselves. I remember one in particular, years before I got into Spare. I met her in my college's art department and in my philosophy class. She told me she was taught by some local Indians and that they showed her how to use her art as her spirits and how to work with them. Really fascinated me since I had the same idea but never pursued it or knew how to.
I think the taboo is more a protection against getting inexperienced mages from dabbling. I have heard so many stories of how someone called a "Goetic" spirit up and their life turned to shit. I have never gotten any bad results from them. However, I must say I approach them differently than many do. I don't go in commanding this and proclaiming that. I call them up for the same reason I call most spirits, to experience them. Also, everyone loves to have their picture drawn and when I call a spirit I always ask if it is OK to draw them and publish them. That goes a long way I assume in making friends. I think people get problems when they call up a spirit they have no conception of what they are and start commanding things of them instead of experiencing what they are and what they know. Very rarely have I asked a spirit to DO things for me, and only once I have called them up prior to and have worked well with them. I treat spirits as individual entities that can choose to do or not do as per their will. Using this approach I have had great results and only a few times has a spirit told me no they would not outright help, usually they will explain what they are willing to do if asked. I really feel the secret is going into it with the same confidence and curiosity an explorer has when entering a new territory. You do not barge into a tribe's town, claiming to be the voice and will of god and lord over them, that is a great way to get killed. BUT, by going in confident yet humble, seeking knowledge and experience you will find many willing to help and to aid you on your journey.

  8. Hi Justin I was wondering if these tools can be used to connect and communicate with some of the earthzone Being's in PME.For example could I draw the Sigil...and gaze at it until it fire's up while calling the Being's name. Is this technique safe...I have a feeling that it is.also I don't use circles etc when doing experiments, because I realise that I Am the centre of my universe with extends out into Infinity.
Thanks in advance and if you can add any tips please do so.

    1. Even with the realization of you being the center you should at least do a small ritual or reinforce your aura with the idea of protection and a higher vibration during any sort of spirit work. A quick meditation on your aura being a perfectly protected shell is fine. Some spirits can have intense energies that may throw your system for a loop!

Most of the ritual and tools used in evocation are designed to get your consciousness in the right state to properly become aware of the subtle planes for better communication in the conscious mind with a spirit. So, you could just stare at a sigil and the spirit appear (happens all the time actually) someone who has not properly prepared their mind would observe anything but still be influenced by the spirit. A person in a light trance may see the energy gather as the spirit appears and receive inspiration in a passive way which is fine but will still not be as profound as getting into a deeper meditative state and creating a suitable mental and astral environment for the spirit to appear. As always, experiment and see what results work best for you!

    2. Oooh wow, just seen the reply. Thanks for your advice.
I usually invoke the Divine Within, expand my astral body to the centre of the Universe, perform my version of the lbrp then clean my aura and chakras with white gold light.after that I would reinforce my protective shield around me.Thats standard...then I will continue with whichever Bardon exercises I'm working on or do an evocation.I evoked Haniel from your Telesma and the results was profound and intense. Her energises stayed with me for days and I shall continue to work with her and the other Archangels from Telesma.its a very powerful ritual tool.i still have much to learn but the guidance and inspiration I'm receiving is remarkable hehehe.
You Sir have been a great help to me and I appreciate you very much.Have a blessed new year and I hope you don't mind me asking for guidance every now and then.
